As we talk about the resurrection of Jesus Christ this Easter Sunday, many of us will turn our thoughts to life beyond the grave. After all, if the resurrection of Jesus Christ point to any one truth, it is that there is life beyond the grave. To put it another way, death is not the end. Now, if this is true (and it is true), then the resurrection of Jesus Christ has eternal implications for every living soul.
First, all people will be raised. Jesus Himself said, “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out – those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned” (John 5:28-29). Second, all people will be judged. The Bible says, “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Third, all people will be divided into one of two groups. The Bible says, “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life” (Matt. 25:46). Fourth, all people must make a decision. The Bible says, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve … as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). Moreover, the Bible says, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).
Our decision to follow Christ will not only decide our eternal destiny but also shape our life here on earth today. As that song goes, “Because He lives I can face tomorrow; because He lives all fear is gone; because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.”

One of the great symbols of Easter is the cross. Have you ever thought, why the cross? Why is the cross a symbol of Easter? Well, the reason is because the cross points to the death of Jesus Christ. In fact, the death of Jesus Christ is the focal point of the Bible. The Old Testament foreshadowed the death of Jesus Christ; the gospels proclaim the death of Jesus Christ; and the epistles affirm the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ came into this world to die upon a cross. As the Bible says, “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life” (Matthew 20:28). Why did Jesus die upon a cross? First, Jesus died as our substitute. Jesus died in our place. As the Bible says, “Jesus Christ suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). Second, Jesus died as our sin bearer. As the Bible says, “Jesus Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree (cross)…by whose strips you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Third, Jesus died as our Saviour and deliver. As the Bible says, “And she shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
The symbol of the cross tells us that Jesus died for our sins in order to bring us to God. This is the Easter message. Jesus Christ has reconciled us to God through His death, burial, and resurrection. The reason we have the Easter break is to celebrate this wonderful truth. Take time this Easter to celebrate what Jesus has done for you.
Maryborough Baptist Church seeks to communicate the Gospel message in Word and in Action to our Community and helping people become disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
